Dear Mr. Annis, Ms. Gessler and Ms. Joseph:

Thank you for your email of September 16, 2011, and the attached report, co-addressed to my colleague the Honourable Diane Ablonczy, concerning Haiti. I am pleased to also respond on her behalf. I regret the delay in replying to you.

There have been some encouraging developments since you visited Haiti. The Government of Canada is pleased that the rule of law features among Haitian President Michel Martelly's four priorities for his mandate, and sees the recent nomination of a Prime Minister, as well as the nomination of a President to the Supreme Court, as encouraging steps toward a functioning government and an independent judicial branch.

Re: Commentary on your meeting of October 18, 2011 concerning Haiti
November 15, 2011

This six-page letter is a commentary by two activists of the Canada Haiti Action Network. It expresses concern over the limited range of information on Haiti that the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons received at its session of October 18, 2011 devoted to Haiti. It provides links for detailed reading on the situation in Haiti and makes suggestions for broadening the range of iinvited witnesses at future sessions of the Committee.
